New Zealand Trek 2005

Part II, The Routeburn, Day 2 continued

Climbing up Conical Hill, the Routeburn Track visible down below on the right skirting Harris lake

Looking down Hollyford Valley, the ocean surf visible at the end of the valley, under the cloud bank

and the other direction

Brad (Canuck) and Barbara (N. Irish) awed by the views

glacier clad mountains

Sigh, heading back down

And continuing along the other side of the pass

Mackenzie Lake and Hut below (the hut is very small, but visible near the lake backing into the trees)

Brad enjoying invigorating bathing experience in snow-fed lake. The rest of us were sane enough to stay out.

So, since I had plenty of time left in the day, I went for a walk!

Brad chimneying the infamous 'Split Rock'

Soggy Day 3

ominous looking morning

Mackenzie Hut

looks like even the camera has gone for a swim

One of the MANY waterfalls that we had to walk through/over/in along the short 4 hours of trail. There were plenty of larger ones, but the camera was just getting too wet to take many photos.

Taking a break at Howden Hut in an attempt to dry off and warm up a bit, after which Brad split off to return via the Greenstone and Barbara and I continued out to the Divide Trailhead in Fiordland NP
