Observing up at Mauna Kea
May 2006
Silver sword
View of Mauna Loa
Hualalai in the distance
Hale Pohaku
At the summit
Subaru and the Kecks
Gemini
Maui's Haleakala in the distance
Mauna Kea's summertime night sky!
(The hint of pink in the top corner is an artifact of my camera, the orange-pink in
the lower left is the sodium vapor lamps of Hilo)
Looking towards the center of the Milky Way
The full Scorpion, claws and all! The
Milky Way is visible near the bottom, and below to the left, in pink-orange, are the lights
of Hilo. The bright smeared spot near the top is Jupiter. Antares is in the center.
The Southern Cross and alpha and beta Centauri
The southern cross just above Mauna Loa, and the
lights of the ML observatory
A fuzzy scorpion (easy to pick out) and sagittarius
Same but clear
Southern Cross, a and b Cen, and the dark
Coalsack nebula in the center
Same, but with a and b Cen near the center.
