Second hike to flowing lava.... this time into the sea

Nick, Maela, myself, and a few Chileans in town to help with the Gemini north silver coating took off one afternoon for an afternoon/night hike to flowing lava. This was much easier than the previous 10 hour allnighter trek that involved climbing up cliffs and hiking over a'a lava. This one just involved walking along the pahoehoe lava coast for 3 miles (still takes about 1.5 hours each way on lava). We got to enjoy the landscape, be dazzled by orange shimmering solid lava in the beautiful sunset, witness flowing lava in daylight, and finally watch the molten lava start to appear all over the landscape around us and glow brighter and brighter as the twilight grew deeper.

This
part was actually on a "trail" - note the reflectors leading the way. This
only lasted 2/3 mile or so. The rest involved our own meanderings down the coast
in search of the path of least resistence.

Nick, looks like we are finally getting somewhere!

Oh yeah! I
think we've made it.

We went a
little further inland to watch a breakout ooze while eating dinner.
